Marketing 101 – How To Build A Following Online

When you think of marketing, what comes to mind? Funny TV commercials with skateboarding monkeys, radio spots with corny themes, or flyers promising the BEST sales and HUGE giveaways? Well, when it comes to marketing online things work a little differently. Instead of TV commercials and corny radio spots, we have Youtube, and instead of colorful flyers, we have online giveaways and newsletters. Let me give you an idea as to how some of these marketing strategies work.

First of all, you’ll need a decent understanding of how Google works. In order to build traffic, or provide more visibility to your website, you must follow Google’s guidelines and optimize your website in such a way that Google will decide that you are a relevant authority on the subject. Once you’ve mastered the basic on-page SEO, it’s time to get out there and market your website by building back-links to your homepage, and therefore building your authority.

One way to do this is through Article Marketing. Basically, you write good quality articles relevant to your niche and then submit them to different article directories. For example, lets say I have a website that sells mountain bikes and accessories. I could write an article explaining the difference between full suspension and front suspension mountain bikes with a link to my homepage at the bottom, submit it to an article directory and wait for the traffic to pile up.

Another marketing strategy that has become extremely popular is the use of social bookmarking sites, like Twitter or Digg, to provide your website with quality back-links. It’s quite simple, all you have to do is sign on to become a member, and simply bookmark a page from your website.

Video marketing is also a reliable strategy. Consumers spend countless hours searching for information on Youtube. Let me give you an example of how it works. You could create a tutorial video on mountain bike maintenance, say for instance bike chain repair. Upload the video to Youtube and provide a link to your homepage.Yes, it’s that simple. And, if you really want to make it entertaining, add a monkey riding a bicycle and watch your traffic go through the roof!

Marketing strategy number four… blogging. Build a blog around the same niche as your website offering more original, quality content, and then lead them back to your homepage. The nice thing about blog marketing is that there’s no limit to how many blogs you can have, and blogs build excellent back-links. Keep in mind, a quality blog is continually updated with new content, so don’t go over-board with too many or you’ll spend all day writing content. In addition, participate in blogging, or in other words, read other people’s blogs and comment. You’d be surprised at how many people will return the favor.

Okay, this is the last one. Newsletter marketing. Offer a free monthly newsletter on your website, and give away quality content every month. You could write stuff like, “The BEST mountain bike deals”, or “How to fix it tips”. The important thing is that it’s quality. Here’s how it works. Offer a sign up on your website, or blogs if you have them, they’ll give you their email address, and you send them their free monthly newsletters with quality content and links to your homepage. If they see something they like, they just might pop over for a visit.
